Cycling Safety Class

from the League of American Bicyclists and Talbot Thrive!

Taught by Mark Mulligan, League Certified Instructor (LCI) #7394

Girls on Bikes

Course Description:

Three hours of highlights from our 9-hour course of Smart Cycling.  This shorter course will introduce the key concepts that keep you safe with fewer examples and no practical exercises on the bike.  All the key ideas of safety will be presented, but you will have to practice and develop them on your own.  The instructor can offer a follow on course to complete the full nine hours if there is interest.

This is a classroom training experience. Riding portion will be offered as optional. Registration is Free!

The key concepts to be covered.

  • Bike fit and pre-ride bike check. Safety equipment. Follow the law (don’t crash yourself)
  • Be predictable, be conspicuous (help drivers avoid you)
  • Ride ready
  • How to scan traffic for hazardous (avoid dangerous situations)
  • How to negotiate traffic lanes
  • Avoidance (how to react if another road user encroaches on you)
  • Actual risk to cyclists in Talbot County based on Maryland State Police records.

Look at these statements.

  • Bicycles should ALWAYS ride all the way to the right side of the road.
  • Bicycles must always ride single file.
  • Bicycles should never be in front of cars at a stop sign or traffic light.

If you answer yes to any of the above, you need some training in traffic law and safe riding. Always and never are the key words—there are reasons when cyclists can or should do the opposite. Learn more about these statements in May!
